Their Tech Entrepreneurship Journey

Business Name

ESMEDIA
What was the inspiration?

From my journey of being a student, to alumni, to working as a full time permanent staff member at Coventry University for 5 years, I have always had a creative and ambitious side. From running team projects to using my own initiative and leading my own projects, such as working as a freelancer at Berlin Fashion Week since 2017.

Why did they decide to set up their tech business?

My idea for ESMEDIA was not just to create a commercial and celebrity client base, but to network with regional businesses and social media influencers and learn from the way they portray themselves online, their promotional outputs and become an attractive media service to them.
What does it do?

Products/services?

ESMEDIA provides high quality photography and video coverage and content for a wide variety of clients and audiences globally and nationally. The rise of the social media influencer and impact of Instagram has made it apparent that video content that is engaging and tailored to specific audiences is key in any commercial business or freelancer.

Therefore, ESMEDIA creates that content for the client, either to a set brief or contributing our own ideas as an imaginative team, inspired by the passion to drive high quality, engaging media content on platforms: Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

What makes it unique?

The personal touch of being there from start to finish of a project makes ESMEDIA stand out. I have excellent communication skills and ability to connect with a culturally diverse audience, which is replicated by my variety of clients, such as Hello!Magazine Canada to the NHS in the United Kingdom.
When did they decide to set it up?

The business has been registered on HMRC since 2017.

What were the main challenges/struggles to setting up?

Social/financial/tech issues?

I had the opportunity, as both a current staff member and alumni of Coventry University, to attend a social enterprise business course led by our Social Enterprise Hub https://www.coventry.ac.uk/cuse/programmes/evolve/ (ESMEDIA has been featured here as a case study also.)

This course allowed me to learn everything in 6 weeks, from legalities to marketing but I had a strong vision of how I wanted the business to look and what kind of audience I was aiming for.

The struggle for me was working on a low budget as a new business –

How did they overcome these?

with a sound knowledge of how to implement free social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram to maximise the business I was able to set it off the ground- with no spending costs on promotion because, thanks to the ability to easily share content online, I was able to have my work featured in local online magazines, have interviews, and shared by established popular models who had a major audience/ following on Instagram.
What were the main success factors?

  • strong ability to network
  • confident presenter and interviews with local and international magazines
  • strong ability to utilise social media for business
  • creative design and ability to deploy media at peak times to engage with a wide range of audiences online.

What are their future plans?

For their tech business?

For themselves?

I am keen to continue to drive ESMEDIA as a established and now award-winning multi-media business.

I am keen to engage with more European film festivals, fashion shows, and local events – especially with our city Coventry titled “City of Culture 2021”

As a woman in media, I am keen to share my story with other students and inspire the idea of being able to set up a social enterprise / business despite having little funding.

Top 2 tips for nascent women technology entrepreneurs

  • Continue to build your networks and in time these will develop into your own clients. A wider range of networks will become a great support for an entrepreneur as there are times you feel so independent you need supportive advice and key people to help drive your passion.
  • Be confident and engage with your audience – listen to what they want and become adaptable!
